Yea I was being an idiot re date / time.
I do understand the fact you should use LBs to manage the maintenance. I went actually a bit further with a customer. They used a template for vCD which had Apache installed (not running) so we just fired that one up with a maintenance page.
But the point I was trying to make is about the comment in the documentation. That customers would see that there is a maintenance based on the message shown. Given that the message is rather generic, it would cause customers to think the site is down, and not under maintenance.
I think the documentation just needs changing really, at this stage the maintenance option is just pointless
