Like said in another post, VCD only renders the display view for small to medium size vApps (around ~2? is the limit) - I am not aware of any setting that will allow you to override this.
For working with large vapps you need to use the list view, not the rendered display. Also as many operations are done at full vApp level, you might want to review why your vapp is so large. If it needs to be then ok - but a couple smaller vApps in many cases will be can be a better design.
