pinning vApp on single host during deploy, soft/hard affinity for vAPP per default

Hey everyone,

this might sound counterproductive at first, but what I;m trying to achieve is that all VMs within a single vAPP end up on the same host during deploy and stay there.

What I want to achieve is that the vAPP can communicate without the traffic ever leaving the host and hammering my host networking for no reason. (example iscsi vm within the vApp as in VMware ICM course).

I know you'd say thats against what VMware is about to spread the load. but if I want to deploy 12 vapps over 3 hosts, why not have 4 vAPPs running on each instead of having the VMs randomly spread (according to DRS)

I could create affinitity rules after it's deployed, but wouldn't it be great if there could be a default 'should run on same host' when deploying the vAPP.

Currently I use local storage on the hosts to achieve this. Another reason to accomplish such an environment is for packet sniffing. If I deploy a vAPP where one VM is supposed to capure the packets of another then this does not work in nested ESXi unless they both sit on same host (even if promiscious mode is enabled)

Any ideas?

Kalli
