Re: Adjustment of Catalog vApps in vCD

i follow, you say delete the VM / vApp and create a new one. Which implies you start again and will have essentially two copies of the template while linked clones exist off the original.

However the sentence "The difference is with vCloud, that you have to make 1 more additional link in the chain to put it back into the Catalog."

i don't follow, how does a fresh vm related to an additional link ?

Do you mean something like :

- create a linked clone from template

- update it

- rename original,

- place new back in catalog

- delete original ?

Say I have a catalog vApp called "Apache Kit v1.0".  This is a gold master vApp with a consolidated disk (linked clone chain of 1).

Now I need to update this vApp because there was some update that came through for Apache or mySQL.

I copy this vapp to "My Cloud", and call it "Apache Kit v1.0 - Update in Progress".  This new vapp has a chain length of 2, assuming Fast Provisioning is enabled.  If not, then the chain length is still 1.

I apply my updates to this vApp, and then copy it back to catalog as "Apache Kit v1.5" which has a chain length of 3 if Fast Provisioning is enabled.

Now my catalog has 2 vApps in it, "Apache Kit v1.5" and "Apache Kit v1.0".

At this point I can delete "Apache Kit v1.0", and not harm "Apache Kit v1.5" or "Apache Kit v1.0 - Update in Progress".
